# The dynasty reasoning guide

This is the deeper reference behind the master prompt. The strategic rules below are a proposed decision framework, not universal laws or a backtested winning system. Load the sections relevant to the current decision.

## Dynasty is several problems happening at once

You are forecasting a football career, allocating scarce lineup and roster capacity, negotiating in a small market, and deciding when to act before uncertainty resolves. The football can move faster than the market; the market can move faster than the football. Your team may need a different asset from the one everyone else most wants.

That is why “Who is the better dynasty player?” often conceals the real question. Better at the same price? Better to buy today? Better to own through next October? Better for a shallow contender or a deep rebuilding roster? Better if you can trade again, or if your league barely trades at all?

For a serious recommendation, finish this sentence:

> At this attainable price, under these league rules, this action serves this objective better than this feasible alternative, because of these supported assumptions. I would change my mind if this happened.

If the answer cannot complete that sentence, it may still be interesting player analysis. It has not yet become decision advice.

## Four values, four questions

These lenses can disagree without any of them being irrational. A productive veteran can have more value to your contender than any return your league offers. A young player can gain real ability while becoming a worse purchase because their price rose even faster.

## Where an edge could come from

Require a named mechanism, not the phrase “the market is wrong.”

- **Information:** relevant verified news or usage has not appeared in the observations you are comparing. Confirm that the proposed seller has not already adjusted their price.
- **Interpretation:** everyone saw the same evidence, but your forecast differs. State the base rate, mechanism and counterevidence.
- **League structure:** exact scoring, required starters, depth or player pool makes a generic ranking a poor match.
- **Time horizon:** the other manager prefers current production while you prefer future flexibility, or vice versa. Both sides can improve their fit.
- **Execution:** you know a feasible alternative, a willing counterparty, or a workable package that generic advice overlooks.
- **Behavior:** repeated local actions reveal preferences or reluctance. Record the behavior; do not pretend you can read minds.

An assistant should be able to say “I see a plausible football thesis, but no demonstrated price advantage.” That is useful work.

## Follow the causal path without pretending it is clean

A practical player model asks how ability, health, team commitment and competition shape deployment; how deployment creates opportunity; and how opportunity becomes scoring under your rules. Those relationships run both directions and share causes. Better play can earn routes. Injury can reduce both routes and efficiency. A new quarterback can change volume, target quality and public sentiment together.

Build the thesis around the small number of mechanisms that carry it. Do not manufacture certainty by listing fifteen statistics that largely measure the same thing. Prior-year points provide history; they do not establish next-year usage or a dynasty price.

For a supposed breakout, ask whether the thesis is about earning more work, benefiting from more team volume, converting opportunities more efficiently, or merely receiving a higher market ranking. Identify what would have to change for that path to happen.

For prospects, separate pre-draft evidence from post-draft evidence. Record cohort definitions and selection effects. A comparison group of players who already survived three NFL seasons is a misleading baseline for all incoming rookies. Film, testing, production, competition level and NFL investment can each inform a thesis; none should be silently promoted into certainty.

Avoid fixed age cliffs applied to every player. Position, role, prior performance, availability, price and the surrounding roster all matter. A declining career distribution can still support a good short-term purchase.

## Two clocks: useful production and market repricing

Every player thesis has a football timeline and a market timeline. They may not line up.

A developmental player could need two seasons to contribute but reach a tradable price after an offseason role change. A veteran could help immediately while their resale market steadily narrows. A contingent running back might get the relevant opportunity next week or never; the bench slot still costs something in the meantime.

For every speculative hold, record the next useful information event, the expected time to resolution, and a review rule. Do not turn a temporary stash into a permanent conviction because you already spent a year waiting.

Waiting can preserve choices, but it can also lose points, buyers, a trade window or an affordable price. “Wait until the value goes up” is incomplete unless the framework evaluates the possibility that it goes down or becomes impossible to realize.

## Narrative analysis that earns its place

Track five separate items:

1. What actually happened, with an original source and date.
2. What interpretation is circulating and where it originated.
3. What football outcome that interpretation implies.
4. What comparable dated market observations show.
5. What an actual local buyer or seller is doing.

A repeated story can affect price even if the football inference is weak. Conversely, an accurate observation can be fully reflected in the asking price. Contrarianism is not automatically insight. Consensus is not automatically correct.

Ask what level of success the current price appears to require. Then test whether that required outcome is reasonable. Express this qualitatively when the evidence does not support an estimated probability.

Do not infer causation merely because a rank moved after a news story. Other players moved, the sample changed, the source adjusted its method, or earlier trades may have anticipated the event.

## Your league is the market you have to transact in

Build a simple map of possible counterparties: assets owned, actual roster gaps, likely horizon, stated asks, recent relevant transactions, and evidence of willingness. A need does not prove demand at your price. A team with no viable payment assets may be a poor trade partner despite a perfect positional fit.

Completed transactions reveal accepted exchanges. They do not show every rejected offer. Bundled assets, settings, deadlines and manager incentives limit comparability. A thin local history is useful but cannot justify a precise acceptance probability.

Negotiation should offer a coherent reason for both parties to act. Distinguish an exploratory opener, a defensible fair package, and your maximum cost. Avoid a fabricated story about another offer or another manager's intentions. Repeated insulting offers can carry a relationship cost that a calculator never measures.

The question is not merely whether you can exit at a quoted value. Ask who could pay it, what they would pay with, whether that return improves your roster, and when the opportunity exists.

## Replacement is a feasible player, not a generic cutoff

Distinguish your next bench option, the best available waiver option, the replacement you could acquire at a cost, and the advantage you need against opponents. Flex eligibility connects positions, so evaluate the complete legal lineup rather than separate position lists.

**Synthetic example:** two current starters project for 17 and 15 points per normal week. Trading both for a 24-point player produces 30 points if the replacement adds six, versus 32 before. If the replacement adds twelve, the new total is 36. The immediate break-even replacement is eight. All projections are invented for illustration; no future value or availability difference is specified.

“Get the best player” cannot resolve this trade without the replacement. “Never trade depth” cannot resolve it either.

## Roster spots are choices you can use

Depth can provide injury coverage, predictable substitutions, contingent upside, or trade inventory. Distinguish these jobs. Three receivers you cannot confidently start and cannot sell are not automatically three useful assets.

For each addition, identify who gets cut now, who might be cut after IR activation, and what future rookie selections require. For each open slot, identify its realistic use. Do not assign it an enormous generic “optionality premium” disconnected from the waiver pool.

Managed lineups also require decisions before games. An unpredictable spike week is not equivalent to one automatically captured in best ball. Depth value depends partly on your ability and willingness to manage it.

## Team direction is a policy that changes with evidence

Assess current legal starter strength, playoff path, depth resilience, future starter coverage, tradable inventory, and ownership of your own picks. Record alone is noisy; a young average age is not a plan.

A flexible team might sell a fragile asset while buying inexpensive production elsewhere. A strong contender might decline an expensive veteran because the upgrade is small. An eliminated team might retain a veteran whose actual selling price is worse than the useful production or future options surrendered.

For a rebuild, specify the mechanism and exit conditions: which weak positions must improve, which assets provide flexibility, what acceptable prices would accelerate the timeline, and what evidence triggers a return to buying points. Otherwise “rebuild” can become a permanent excuse to collect unrealized value.

When trading with a direct competitor, assess their resulting lineup too. Your roster can improve while your relative championship position worsens. This is one consideration alongside price, alternatives and future value; it is not a blanket ban on mutually useful trades.

Owning your own early-pick upside changes incentives. Having traded your first does not make every subsequent win-now purchase sensible. Apply the actual draft-order rules and league obligations.

## Picks are uncertain rights, and your actions can change them

Track origin and ownership separately. Project slots using the originating franchise, the actual order rules, the remaining schedule and its ability to improve. Treat class quality and slot uncertainty as separate questions. In devy, check which prospects have already been removed from the eventual rookie pool.

**Synthetic example:** Team B is weak today. You send B two useful starters for B's next first. The trade itself can make B stronger and its first later. Evaluate the post-trade team before calling the pick early.

A pick preserves the ability to select among future players, trade before selection, or wait for more information. Those choices can be valuable. They are not a promise of appreciation, a guaranteed elite prospect or an asset that consumes no future roster capacity.

Startup and rookie ADP describe different selection problems. A draft position is a choice among what remains available, not an isolated rank. Tier breaks, the next pick, opponent needs and attainable trade-down returns matter. Never assume a preferred player survives a trade-down because the average draft position says they should.

## Risk lives in combinations and paths

Two assets can depend on the same quarterback, offense, injury contingency, coaching change, aging pattern or market narrative. Exposure across several leagues can amplify the same thesis. Distinguish weekly scoring correlation from long-term role and resale correlation.

Variance itself is not automatically good or bad. The right choice depends on playoff qualification, likely opponents, lineup alternatives and the price paid. A star's ceiling does not justify an upgrade of any size at any cost.

Show what happens if the intended follow-on transaction fails. “Buy A, flip B, then use the return for C” is three contingent decisions. Evaluate the position you are left with after each step. Prefer plans that remain acceptable if the next trade never happens.

## Keep the arithmetic honest

Use calculations when their inputs and units are defensible. An immediate lineup delta can compare points under the same scoring assumptions. Market observations can remain in their native units. Do not add fantasy points, ranking values, subjective scores and title probabilities into a decorative formula.

If using a long-horizon model, define the utility scale, time horizon, assumptions and terminal treatment. Model mutually exclusive hold/sell paths. Do not collect full sale proceeds in multiple seasons while still owning the player, or separately count the same flexibility benefit twice.

A useful conceptual objective is to choose the feasible sequence of actions with the best expected outcome for the manager's stated preferences. That describes a decision problem; it does not supply the missing forecasts or prove a numerical optimum.

## What a strong answer leaves you with

You should know what to do, at what price, why it fits this team, which evidence carries the call, what could break it, and when to revisit it. An answer can be decisive about the action while uncertain about the player's career, because the action may remain attractive across several plausible futures.

That is the standard this framework is designed to pursue. Whether it improves a particular model's decisions or forecasts needs testing.
